In this example I will use two new features of Slickr Flickr 1.14 that allow more than 20 photos to be displayed from a Fiickr Group

• api_key (entered in Slickr Flickr Admin Settings)
• search = “group” (added as new attribute)

• Go to Slickr Admin Settings and enter and Save your Slickr Flickr API Key
• View the group on Flickr and then copy its URL from the address bar
• Paste the URL in to the http://idgettr.com page to obtain the Flickr Group ID
• Use the Slickr Flickr command with the parameters search search=”groups” id=”Flickr Group Id goes here” items=”50″

Here is an example where we have a gallery of 70 photos.

Limitations

Right now the Flickr Id API limits you to 50 items for each fetch. If users would like to fetch more let me know and I can make multiple fetches and return the all the photos.

In release 1.14 Slickr Flickr ignores the tag when fetching from a group. In the next release I will add filtering by tag

Yesterday the British Royal Family put almost 700 of their photos on Flickr. The photos cover Royal public events, meetings and audiences dating back over 150 years. New images will be added as more engagements and events take place.

The Queen has been active in social media recently on Twitter and YouTube account and Flickr is another example of how the royals are getting online.

The Queen is a long time IPod user since 2005 (the a 6GB silver Mini version) and is also said to be a keen photographer.

Highlights include early pictures of Queen Victoria and other leading figures from the era such as Thomas Carlyle and Charles Napier.

The launch of the photos on the Flickr account is timed to coincide with the summer opening of Buckingham Palace tomorrow, since it features photographs commissioned for the exhibition “The Queen’s Year”.

Meanwhile Queen Elizabeth is on a fourteen day cruise on the Hebridean Princess, sailing around the Western Isles. It looks a bit like a car ferry because it used to be one, however it has been refitted as a 30 cabin small luxury cruise ship.

Gallery Of Group Photos For Marta

This gallery was concerned with displaying a Flickr group’s photos with the inclusion of a link back to the original photo on Flickr, however the flickr link was not appearing even though she had set flickr_link=”on”. On investigation, it was apparent Slickr Flickr was ignoring the flickr_link setting.

It turned out that the quotation marks around the ‘on’ were not the standard vertical double quotation marks ASCII character 34 (") but slighting slanting opening quotes ASCII character 8220 (“). Simply replacing “on“ by "on" solved the problem

Hi Slickr Flickr Users,

This is the first in a series of monthly updates on news with Slickr Flickr. It covers what happened in the month just ending and what is in the pipeline for next month.

New Dedicated Slickr Flickr Website

At the start of May I set up the Slickr-Flickr sub-domain of my DIY Webmastery membership site as a dedicated resource for Slickr Flickr users. This site contains information on how to download, install, configure and use the WordPress Slickr Flickr plugin. It has plenty of examples and is a vehicle to get help.

Slickr Flickr Activities

Three weeks ago there was a flurry of updates as I implemented a few new features:

• the slideshow/gallery combo (a.k.a, galleria) – see Simple Slideshow-Gallery Combo
• adding a clickable link for the slideshow – see Clickable Flickr Slideshows
• multiple tag selection (a.k.a. tagmode) see Making a Flickr Gallery or Slideshow With More Than One Tag
• an autoplay option for the lightbox

Flickr RSS Caching Issues Resolved

One of the most common issues with Slickr Flickr was to do with caching. You would update Flickr but it would take what seemed at age before those changes appeared in your Slickr Flickr gallery or slideshow on WordPress. This was down to WordPress caching the Flickr RSS feed. The cache could take up to 12 hours to expire which meant that it could be up to 12 hours before your WordPress site reflected your latest photos, titles and descriptions.

Two weeks ago I released Slickr Flickr version 1.7 with a button on the Admin settings page which clears the RSS cache. This means that WordPress can be updated with the changes on Flickr as soon as they are available via RSS. However the Flickr RSS feed is not updated the instant you update the photos on Flickr. I believe Flickr updates its RSS feeds every 15 minutes or so. In other words you may still have to wait a little while but at least it is now only 15 minutes and not 12 hours!

Note that you do need to clear the RSS cache manually; the feature is not automatic. So, if your slideshow or gallery is out of date, then go to Slickr Flickr Admin Settings and click the Clear RSS cache button then refresh your page.

Below is a demonstration that shows the caching problem and how to resolve it.

Slickr Flickr Video Tutorials

Last week I started creating some Slickr Flickr Video Tutorials. These enlightening lessons have my soft Scottish accent explaining my thoughts as I go about demonstrating some of the new features of Slickr Flickr: the first three videos cover sorting photos, featuring other photographers work and creating slideshows or galleries from photos with different tags. I hope you find them useful. The videos are delivered though the free membership site. (My paid job is creating membership sites for people who want to sell information products)

Slickr Flickr Plans

Next month’s release will address an issue that has cropped up with a few users – that is compatibility with other Lightboxes. Version 1.7 supports a standard LightBox and a LightBox with an automatic slideshow. The new release will allow you to use ThickBox, ShadowBox or FancyBox or Shutter; the last two both require separate plugins. To select your lightbox all you need to do is go to Slickr Flickr Admin settings and choose the LightBox from the dropdown. I did spend some time trying to make it work with LightBox 2 but I could not get it to behave properly so abandoned this idea.

The other new feature is in response to the question on using larger thumbnails in the Flickr Gallery. Rather than use the default of ‘square’ thumbnails you will be able to choose to use larger ones. But please note the thumbnails will be either portrait or landscape so you should try and ensure that all your photos in the show are of the same orientation for best results.

This tutorial is about using a Flickr Slideshow to promote an affiliate product. In the example I’m using the Slickr Flickr WordPress Plugin to prepare a slideshow featuring the Canon Powershot A1100 Camera.

The steps involved are

1. Take photos of the product
2. Upload the photos to Flickr and tag them
3. Write a product review on your WordPress site
4. Sign up to Amazon and get your affiliate code
5. Get your product affiliate links from Amazon and add them to your blog post
6. Include a Slickr Flickr slideshow and set up the link attribute as your Amazon affiliate link to the product
7. Make a smaller copy of the slideshow as a sidebar widget but have the link point at your product review

Taking Photos Of Your Affiliate Product

I would recommend taking between 6 and 12 photos of the product. In this example, the photos included the box, the manuals and disk, views of the camera from different angles, the battery and flash card compartment, plus the accessories I bought with camera: a larger capacity flash card and a USB card reader.

Uploading Photos to Flickr

Log in to your account, click on the ‘Upload Photos and Videos’ link in the ‘You’ menu. The three steps involved are: choosing the photos, uploading them, and then adding title descriptions and tags. Apply the same tag to all the photos to put them in the slideshow. In my example I choose “Canon PowerShot A1100″ as the tag. I suggest you add a short but meaningful title for each photo. This will appear as a caption beneath each photo providing you do not set captions=”off” for the slideshow.

WordPress Product Review

Create a new post on your WordPress blog as the product review. The title of the post should include the product name in order to help the search engines find it. For my review, I explained why I wanted to buy a camera, the main features of the camera, included customer ratings, what accessories I also bought and described my experience of using the camera. Once that was complete, all that was missing were the affiliate links and the slideshow.

Amazon Affiliate Account

Go to amazon.com to open an affiliate account. (or amazon.co.uk if you are based in the United Kingdom.

Adding Amazon Links

Login in to Amazon Affiliate Home Page and click the “Links and Banners” tab. Then search for the affiliate product you wish to promote. Click the “Get Link” Tab. The page will look like this.

Highlight the text only version of the link and copy and paste the link into your review post on WordPress. In my review I included links from both amazon.com and amazon.co.uk and also had links to flash card and the card reader as well as the camera itself

Slickr Flickr Slideshow

Add the slideshow with the clickable affiliate link using the code:

In my example:

Slickr Flickr Widget

In this step you drive traffic to your affiliate product review by featuring a smaller version of the slideshow in a widget on each page on your blog.

Go to Appearance, then Widgets, drag a text widget to a sidebar, give it a title, then add the following text into the text widget

Here are the instructions to how to make a gallery or slideshow that uses more than one tag. This is done by using the tagmode attribute.

There are two possible options:

• tagmode=”all” – only selects photos that have all the tags you specify
• tagmode=”any” – selects photos that have any of the tags you specify

In this example we will use demonstrate the different approaches where we will use two tags, individually and then in combination.

We will display galleries:

1. with tag1 (e.g. dogs)
2. with tag2 (e.g. rio)
3. with tag1 OR tag2 (e.g. tag=”dogs,rio” tagmode=”any”)
4. with tag1 AND tag2 (e.g. tag=”dogs,rio” tagmode=”all”)

The results look like this:

This combination using tagmode=”any” gives more photos than the individual sets shown above. In mathematical terms it is the union of the two photo sets.

This combination using tagmode=”all” gives less photos than the individual sets shown above. In mathematical terms it is the intersection of the two photo sets.

Here are the instructions to create a Flickr slideshow or gallery that shows the photos in the order you want.

You use two attributes: “sort” and “direction”. You can sort by title, by date or by description; and the direction can be either “ascending” (the default) or “descending”.

In this example we will use description.

1. Upload your photos to Flickr and tag them
2. Edit the description of the photos and include numbers at the start of each description. If you have more than 9 pictures then use two digits. e.g 01, 02, 03, etc., in order to preserve the sort order which is really alphabet and not numeric
3. Login in as an administrator on your wordpress site
4. Edit your Post
5. In the content of the post add the slickr-flickr shortcode with type=”slideshow” and remember to specify sort=”description” direction=”ascending”
6. Save
7. View the results

The code you use in your post is:

[ slickr-flickr tag="Canon PowerShot A1100" type="gallery" sort="description" direction="ascending" flickr_link="on"]
